‘I was surprised’: Antonio Conte offers blunt verdict on state of Tottenham affairs after his arrival

Nobody ever said taking the Tottenham job would be an easy task and Antonio Conte has admitted to being surprised by the amount of work needed at the north London club.

Conte took the job a few months back when Nuno Santo lasted just a matter of weeks in the role. Since Conte arrived, Spurs have enjoyed some good moments, although last week’s loss against Southampton brought back into light just how short Tottenham are in terms of being a very top PL club.

The January transfer window saw the arrivals of Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski. The pair arrived from Juventus, although there is a concession that more players are needed if Spurs are to get success under Conte.

Work To Do

Speaking to the press yesterday, Conte admitted to being surprised at just how much work is needed at the club.

“I was surprised. When you arrive at a new club, a new situation, you don’t know what you will find there. For sure, I am used to work in a specific way. I don’t care about what happened in the past because I don’t want to compare myself with people,” Conte told Football.London.

“I know that I have found a lot of work to do but for my idea of football, for my ambition I can tell you only this: for my ambition I have found a situation that needs a lot of work to do. I can tell you only this because I don’t want to compare my work with the work in the past of other people. For my ambition and my level I have found a situation with a lot of work to do.”

Conte will be hoping for a successful weekend this time around. His team take on Wolves at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

TBR’s View: Summer Months Huge For Tottenham And Conte

There is no doubt more new players are needed. It’s a pivotal moment in time for Tottenham really. They’ve got one of the very best managers out there and now they need to give him the tools to bring success.

This summer will prove if Spurs mean business. They’ve started the clearout in January and Kulusevski and Bentancur should prove good signings. But Fabio Paratici will need to deliver more in the summer. From there, it will then be down to Conte to deliver.
