Antonio Conte is surely going to start Tottenham Hotspur's £20m man in PL opener now - opinion

Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte has been hit with some bad injury news over the past week which means Rodrigo Bentancur will surely start in this weekend’s Premier League opener.

The Uruguayan signed for Spurs back from Juventus in January for a fee which could reach £20 million with potential add-ons (BBC). And the midfielder may have received a boost to his chances of starting the opening game against Southampton this weekend.

Football.London reports that Oliver Skipp will miss the first three weeks of the season after suffering a foot injury in training. And new signing Yves Bissouma could also miss Spurs’ first game of the season after picking up a slight hamstring problem.

This leaves Conte slightly short in central midfield and the Italian will now surely start Bentancur in the club’s opening fixture of the new season.

Conte to start Bentancur

Bentancur has been a mainstay in Conte’s side since making the switch from Italy and was a big reason why the club got back into the Champions League last season.

But the 25-year-old faces added competition this season after the signing of Yves Bissouma from Brighton and the return of Oliver Skipp.

Skipp suffered an injury that ruled him out for the remainder of last season just after Bentancur arrived in February. This meant that the Uruguayan was able to forge a solid partnership with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in central midfield.

But a starting place this season seems a bit more unclear as Conte has a wealth of options to choose from in midfield.

Bentancur set to get the nod this weekend

Bentancur has featured heavily in pre-season under Conte but Bissouma got the nod over the Uruguayan against Roma last weekend as he partnered Hojbjerg in midfield.

Which could have meant that Bissouma was set to start this weekend against Southampton but now the Mali midfielder could be ruled out.

And if Bissouma is unavailable for the Saints game, then Conte will surely start Bentancur alongside Hojbjerg for the Premier League opener.

The Spurs boss does have Pape Matar Sarr available but it is unlikely that he would start the youngster over Bentancur.

With Skipp ruled out for three weeks after an injury which left his teammates shook and doubts over the ex-Brighton man’s fitness, Bentancur should get the chance to nail down a starting place at the beginning of the new season.
