West Ham United had to fight hard to get through their League Cup tie with League One side AFC Wimbledon last night. After going 1-0 down they continued to struggle to find the net against 10-men after Wimbledon had a man sent off.

The Hammers eventually pulled away to win 3-1. Goals from Issa Diop, Angelo Ogbonna and Javier Hernandez were enough for West Ham to get the win.

But that should not paper over the cracks of this performance, especially from one player.

Ogbonna’s goal was met with a certain sense of inevitable hilarity by West Ham fans online. They could not quite believe the Italian had scored after another poor display.

during the Carabao Cup Second Round match between AFC Wimbledon and West Ham United at The Cherry Red Records Stadium on August 28, 2018 in Kingston upon Thames, England.

His form this season has been extremely questionable. After a dismal showing in their loss to Bournemouth, he found himself dropped for the recent defeat to Arsenal, a game West Ham will feel they could have won on another day.

Against Wimbledon, he was no better. His concentration levels appear to be at an all-time low and West Ham fans are right to be disappointed in his displays. On his day, the Italian international is a very good defender.

But his goal should not paper over the cracks of another disappointing performance from the 30-year-old, who needs to up his game.
