Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has praised Cristian Romero’s influence on the Spurs players around him.
The Tottenham manager, speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Chelsea match, loves how Romero is “guiding the other guys around him”.
Spurs have enjoyed a superb campaign so far, going top of the Premier League table and remaining unbeaten in the top flight.
Romero has played a huge part in this upturn in form, as one of the key members of a Tottenham defence that has become a lot more solid.
So much so, in fact, that the 25-year-old has been nominated for October’s Premier League Player of the Month award.
‘They feel security having him beside them’
Football.london‘s Alasdair Gold asked Postecoglou why the partnership between Romero and Micky van de Ven is working so well, and whether their differences complemented each other.
“No, I think it’s just down to the players themselves,” said the Spurs boss.
“Cuti I ‘m sure was disappointed with the way his club football went last year, but he also ended up winning the World Cup. Since I’ve been here I just think he’s an outstanding defender.

“He’s a real strong personality and he has a real winner’s mindset in everything he does.
“For us, I think there’s great growth in our front third but I think the way the defensive side of our game has come together, when you consider Vicario has just joined the club. Micky has just joined the club. Destiny has just come across in his first year and Pedro in his second year but probably first year playing in that position.
“I think the one constant and the rock in there has been Romero with the way he has taken on the responsibility of guiding the other guys around him so they look assured.
“I think they feel security having him beside them, I think he’s a big part of why we’ve done so well defensively.”
Romero back to his best for Tottenham – TBR View
Romero’s Player of the Month nomination came after an impressive month both on a personal level and with Tottenham.
He was an imposing presence as Spurs defended a 1-0 lead away at Luton with 10 men, before contributing to another clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Fulham.
Romero also made 141 passes in the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, the most on record by a Tottenham player in a Premier League match.
Last season you could often sense the frustration getting the better of Romero as Spurs looked a shadow of the team they were under Mauricio Pochettino.
Now, with Micky van de Ven alongside Romero, not to mention great full-backs and a keeper, there’s a lot less anxiety within the back line than there used to be.
This, along with other things clicking in the squad on and off the pitch, has culminated in Tottenham going top of the table. Long may it continue!
