Ange Postecoglou says £165k-a-week Spurs star is a doubt for Manchester United trip

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has admitted that Sunday’s Premier League trip to Manchester United has probably come too soon for Cristian Romero.

The Spurs boss, speaking to football.london, said the £165,000-a-week defender has only just returned to training following his injury lay-off.

Romero, once again a key player for Tottenham this season, has been out of action since just before Christmas.

The Argentina international had to come off at half-time in Spurs’ 2-1 win over Everton last month after suffering a hamstring strain.

Romero subsequently sat out Tottenham’s Premier League fixtures against Brighton and Brentford, as well as last Friday’s 1-0 FA Cup win over Burnley.

Man United trip ‘might be a bit close’ for Tottenham star Cristian Romero

Although Postecoglou was able to confirm that the 25-year-old is on the mend and back in training, he’s very unlikely to feature as early as Sunday.

The Tottenham boss also provided updates on Ben Davies, Giovani Lo Celso and Dane Scarlett, who sadly have all picked up injuries.

“From last week, Ben Davies came off with a hamstring – probably looking at a month or so with him,” said Postecoglou.

“Gio Lo Celso, similar, but it’s a bit harder to diagnose where he’s at so we’ll send him for tests on Monday but he’s out.

“Dane Scarlett has picked up an injury in training so he’s out. Both muscle injuries – Dane hamstring, Gio muscle.

“The only one to join the main group today is Romero and that’s it I think. He’s just started training so it’s fair to say it might be a bit close this weekend.”

Spurs have largely got back on track after their downturn in form in November and early December. They’ve now won four of their last five in the league, and won in the FA Cup third round last time out.

While it’s a shame Romero will likely miss the Man United game, it’s good to hear he’s back in training and hopefully it won’t be long before he’s back in action.
