Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has responded when asked who will captain Spurs against Burnley in the FA Cup on Friday night.
The Tottenham boss held his pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon, ahead of Spurs’ encounter with the Clarets at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Son Heung-min is Tottenham’s permanent captain, but he won’t be available as he has departed for the Asian Cup, where he will represent South Korea.
Meanwhile, both of Spurs’ vice-captains, Cristian Romero and James Maddison, are out injured.
Therefore, Postecoglou will have to name a new candidate wear the armband when Tottenham face the Premier League strugglers in the third round of the FA Cup.
The Spurs boss, however, didn’t give much away when asked by the club’s media team – as per YouTube – if he had decided who gets the role on Friday night.

“No, not really – the captain is Sonny,” replied Postecoglou. “Sonny is the club captain and Madders and Romero. So whoever wears the armband tomorrow isn’t that important to me.
“What’s more important to me is that Sonny has been an outstanding leader in deeds, actions and words and we will need players to step up tomorrow irrespective of who is wearing the armband.
“And we need to bridge that hole he has left, because I think he has been outstanding for us. We will need a number of people to step up in that area.”
Ben Davies or Guglielmo Vicario to captain Spurs against Burnley?
Earlier this week, The Athletic’s Jack Pitt-Brooke speculated that Ben Davies is the obvious choice as stand-in, having worn the arm in the Carabao Cup tie against Fulham back in August.
However, Pitt-Brooke also suggested that Postecoglou could hand the armband to Guglielmo Vicario instead.
This is because the goalkeeper has proven his leadership qualities since arriving at N17 in the summer.
Other more leftfield options for the Tottenham armband include Destiny Udogie or Dejan Kulusevski, although Pitt-Brooke acknowledged either option would be “surprising”.
We’ll see what happens on the night. However, Postecoglou seems to have made clear that the captaincy won’t really matter that much on the night, and that the onus is on the team to do what they need to do.
