Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has admitted that he thought Cristian Romero’s tackle against Newcastle United on Sunday was ‘clumsy’.

Speaking to the media ahead of Tottenham’s trip to Nottingham Forest, the Aussie was quizzed about the incident involving Cristian Romero and Callum Wilson.

The Argentine defender was fortunate to escape a red card in Spurs’ 4-1 win over the Magpies on Sunday.

Tottenham were cruising towards a comfortable victory as they headed into the final 10 minutes of the game 3-0 up.

Romero then lunged into a late tackle on Wilson, which resulted in his studs landing on the striker’s ankle. The referee instantly brandished a yellow card and the tackle was cleared by the VAR. But it’s fair to say the moment has divided opinion.

Gary Neville thought Romero was lucky to escape a red card, while former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes the VAR made the correct call.

Now, Ange Postecoglou has delivered his verdict on the incident ahead of Tottenham’s clash against Forest.

Postecoglou delivers verdict on Romero’s tackle against Newcastle

As quoted by Football.London, Postecoglou admitted the tackle was ‘clumsy’ but insists that he doesn’t need to speak at length with the defender about it.

“To an extent but it’s fair to say the spotlight will be on him for the rest of the year. Any challenge he does whether it’s something that’s pretty clear like the Chelsea game or last week which I thought was as much clumsy as anything else.

“And he knows that, he understands that. He’s just got to make the adjustments that he needs to do during the game.

“But I don’t think it’s a subject for long chats. It’s pretty evident the impact he has on us when he’s playing and when he’s not, and we much prefer to have him out there.”

While it’s up for debate as to whether or not Romero should have been sent off, Postecoglou will surely have been unimpressed with the moment.

The 25-year-old has only just returned from a three-match suspension following a red card against Chelsea last month.

It’s no secret that Romero is prone to a sending-off from time to time due to his aggressive style of defending. But now, more than ever, it’s vital he avoids aunty further suspensions ahead of the festive period.

Tottenham are already without Micky van de Ven until the new year and Ben Davies is currently playing as a make-shift centre-back alongside the Argentine.
