Tottenham Hotspur made it through to the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup after a 2-1 win against Manchester City at home.

Goals from Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr gave Tottenham a two-goal lead in the first half, but Matheus Nunes got one back for the away side shortly before the interval.

Manchester City pushed for an equaliser in the second half but it wasn’t to be as Ange Postecoglou’s side prepare to face Manchester United next in the quarterfinals.

A handful of Tottenham players impressed on the night, but Postecoglou singled out Destiny Udogie for special praise after he came on as a substitute.

Micky van de Ven started at left-back but was substituted early in the game with a suspected hamstring problem.

“He felt something in his hamstring so we will wait and see. We hope it’s nothing too serious,” said Postecoglou after the game.

“He felt something there. It was disappointing for him, he was gutted because he was looking forward to making a big contribution.

“It’s part of the process for us, heavy game schedule, so we are going to have some attrition along the way.”

Udogie came on in his place and produced a spirited showing to keep the Man City attackers at bay, earning praise from Postecoglou for his fighting display.

He added: “Destiny stepped in and played another game and I thought he was outstanding when he came on.”

Udogie’s stats vs Man City

Udogie played 76 minutes and did well against Savinho and Jacob Wright as he kept things tidy at the back while also bombing up and down the pitch when the opportunity arose.

His underlying numbers from the game are as follows:

Glenn Hoddle suggested Udogie needs to improve off the ball earlier this season. Judging by his performance against Man City, he has already made some improvements in that aspect of his gameplay.
