Ange Postecoglou has made a fresh claim about Mauricio Pochettino’s spell at Tottenham Hotspur.

The duo are set to face off once against at Stamford Bridge tonight after Mauricio Pochettino picked up a 4-1 victory at his old home back in November.

It proved to be a dramatic return for Pochettino, with his Chelsea side coming back from 1-0 down to secure three points against nine-men Tottenham.

While the Argentine was a fan favourite during his spell in north London, it’s fair to say his move to Spurs’ London rivals has somewhat damaged that feeling among Tottenham supporters.

But he very much remains their standout manager of the Premier League era after guiding them to successive title challenges and a Champions League final.

Now, speaking ahead of tonight’s clash, Ange Postecoglou has been discussing Pochettino’s spell at Spurs.

Postecoglou makes fresh Pochettino claim ahead of Chelsea vs Tottenham

Speaking to Football.London ahead of tonight’s London derby, Postecoglou was asked whether the club are still aiming to better Pochettino’s achievements.

The Aussie was keen to point out that he views the Argentine’s tenure at Spurs as a success.

“I don’t know but I don’t really ask those questions, I don’t think’s relevant,” the Tottenham boss responded. “It’s a funny one because if all we measure success on is just trophies, then ok, but I don’t think that’s what life is about.

“And anyone who doesn’t think Mauricio’s five-and-a-half years here were successful doesn’t really appreciate football for what it is. Because to get to a Champions League Final, to be runners-up in the toughest league in the world, OK there’s no silverware but in my mind, with the way he developed that group, he was a success, but this is the business we’re in and we get measured by other things.

“We have to accept that, but these are not questions I need to ask or investigate. I go by what I see now, today, and today what is important to me is the lads training and getting ready for a big game.”

Was Pochettino a success at Tottenham?

While the lack of silverware during Pochettino’s tenure is often used to mock himself and Spurs, there’s no doubt that his spell was a successful one.

Tottenham were yet to mount a serious assault on the Premier League title before Pochettino’s arrival.

The club was also in a difficult spot when he joined in 2014 and after a fifth-place finish in his debut season, Spurs reached new heights thereafter.

Of course, he failed to deliver the ultimate prize as Tottenham were pipped to the title twice and beaten by Liverpool in the 2019 Champions League final.

But you only have to look at how difficult his successors have found things at Tottenham, including serial winners Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, who both failed to deliver silverware.
