Ange Postecoglou has publicly told Tottenham’s Djed Spence to do one thing now after saying he’s been ‘outstanding’

One of the players Ange Postecoglou will be most content with at Tottenham Hotspur currently is undoubtedly Djed Spence.

Spence has been in terrific form since being reinstated into Tottenham’s side and his latest all-action performance against Ipswich Town has just become the norm at this point.

Whether it be at left-back or right-back, Djed Spence has shown Ange Postecoglou that he can breathe easily by just giving him a chance.

Tottenham coach Matt Wells always believed in Spence as being a player who was perfectly suited to Postecoglou’s system — which has been proven to be spot on.

The former Nottingham Forest full-back is a top-class defender and tactically flexible — two key traits that would make him an instant fit in most managers’ systems in any case.

Ange Postecoglou says Djed Spence “needs to” keep working hard

Ange Postecoglou will be hoping that Spence can continue to deliver on the pitch until the end of the season.

The Englishman clearly has all the attributes to be widely regarded as one of the best full-backs in the Premier League as long as he stays consistent.

However, where the likes of world-class full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have excelled in recent years unlike their contemporaries is by stepping up week in and week out.

With that being the case, while describing Spence as “outstanding”, Ange Postecoglou has also urged Spence — who Gary Lineker lauded to continue working hard to become the best version of himself.

Postecoglou said via BeanymanSports: “Yeah, as I said last week, he’s been outstanding, he continues to be outstanding. The challenge for Djed is to keep going, you know, not to be satisfied with what he’s got now and with the same hunger and attitude that he’s taken his opportunity. As you said, that’s all you can sort of provide is an opportunity, he needs now to make sure that he doesn’t look back from that and keeps pushing on because he’s got so still so much I think growth in him and potential.”

“He hasn’t really been settled in his career apart over the years, at Forest where he kind of really had some great form, but since then it’s been stop-start for him or he’s just got to ensure now that now that he’s up and running, he keeps going.”

Even Dejan Kulusevsku urged Spence to strive to improve as the Swedish international is convinced his teammate could have a “very good career.”

Ange Postecoglou challenged Spence to step up when giving him a second chance — proving that he was always mentally resolute enough to do so in a Tottenham shirt.

What people close to Djed Spence have said about his attitude at Tottenham

Spence’s attitude at Tottenham has come to light as people close to him have revealed that the motivation to put in the work and keep becoming a better player has been ignited within him.

Journalist Jay Harris recently claimed: “I’ve spoken to people who know him quite well, and they’ve said that Spence is a bit introverted, and he can be quite aloof. And so there are times where people probably have misinterpreted that as him not caring or him having a bad attitude. But I think what we’re seeing before us now is a 24 year old who was a young boy.”

“He’s a young man now. Apparently during his time in Italy with Genoa, that was quite a powerful experience for him because Leeds didn’t work out for a number of different issues, but mainly because he had quite a bad knee injury, which ruled him out, I think, for two and a half months, three months in total. So he’s gone from barely getting a game in the Championship to he played at the San Siro twice with Genoa.”

“He played against Juventus away for Genoa. And so he’s returning to Spurs and he’s thinking, wow, if I want to kick on with my career at the highest level, I seriously need to knuckle down. He did that.”

With Spence having a good head on his shoulders, Ange Postecoglou has every reason to back him to continue hitting new heights.
