Andy Townsend makes claim about Tottenham star Dele Alli’s fitness

Andy Townsend has told BBC Live’s coverage of Tottenham Hotspur’s 5-0 win over Red Star Belgrade that Dele Alli’s improved fitness was the catalyst for the north London side’s big Champions League victory.

Both Harry Kane and Son Heung-min scored a brace while Erik Lamela also netted, as Spurs dispelled their recent bad form to win just their fourth win of the season in all competitions. It sees Spurs sit in second place in Group B.

Alli, 23, has been in poor form at the start of this season and was far from his best last term. But in his last two outings, Mauricio Pochettino has started the England midfielder and he scored against Watford on Saturday.

On Tuesday night, he seemed to be much more involved – making forward runs and looking more like the player that starred in 2016-17. Ex-Chelsea man Townsend believes his improved fitness spraked Spurs into life.

“I think the catalyst for that tonight was a fit and lean-looking Dele Alli,” Townsend said. “When he runs beyond Harry Kane and provides other options for the centre-forward to drop in and collect the ball and feed wide men and use his footballing intelligence then I think it makes such a difference to their team.

“I think this season, when Eriksen has played he has not looked at it at all. We are used to getting a performance out of Son and we have seen another one tonight, but if he doesn’t step up then sometimes Harry Kane can look a little bit predictable. He needs that variation [from Alli] around him to be at his very best.”

TBR’s view – Can Alli finally bring Spurs back to life?

He certainly has the ability to. Taking the pressure off of Kane and Son is a difficult thing to do, but finally giving the England and South Korea captains proper ammunition to fire Spurs forward will give Spurs a huge lift.

Not only that, but with Christian Eriksen left on the bench on Tuesday night and seemingly not looking as though he cares as much, Alli needs to step up in place of the Dane. Spurs need Alli more than ever, and it looks as though he could be about to produce.
