Andy King has told Stadium Astro that Leicester City could go after Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard in order to provide competition and cover for Jamie Vardy – and the French star would surely be the ideal January addition.
Edouard, 22, has been in stunning form for Celtic ever since he first played for the Hoops under Rodgers in August 2017. He joined permanently a year later – clocking up 137 appearances in all competitions during his three-year stay at Celtic.
In that time, Edouard has netted 66 goals and created 32 more. For France’s Under-21 side, he has 11 goals in just six games. Little surprise then, that the former PSG man continues to be linked with moves all over Europe.
King, who spent time at Rangers on loan during 2019-20, says Leicester could go after a player that Rodgers signed for Celtic during his time north of the border – but explains the issue Leicester have with signing a striker to go alongside Vardy.
“They’ve been heavily linked with Edouard from Celtic, obviously a player who Brendan knows,” King said. “That’s one they might look to do. The issue they’re going to have is if Jamie Vardy is fit, he plays. It is similar with Tottenham and Harry Kane.”
However, Edouard is the ideal addition and it is a move that would suit Edouard perfectly. Still only 22, Edouard would need a season to adapt to the Premier League and with Vardy turning 34 this season, that would fit like a glove.
It would see Vardy continue to churn out performances for the rest of the season and Edouard watch from the bench – making substitute and cup appearances if he was to sign in January. Not only that, but the two players could form a partnership.
Vardy likes to play on the shoulder and run in behind but Edouard is much more creative. Last season, Edouard had a hand in 19 assists. Forming a two-man attack would see Leicester have the creativity in Edouard and the lethal touch in Vardy.
Edouard would be the perfect addition for Celtic, especially given the previous relationship between himself and Rodgers. Whether Celtic would allow Edouard to go in January before 10 in a row remains to be seen.
