Andrew Hughes told LUTV during commentary of Leeds United’s win over Huddersfield Town that Patrick Bamford absolutely deserved his goal in the victory, and insisted that he has been top class every time he has seen him play for the Whites.

Bamford ended a long wait for a goal in the match against the Terriers. Leeds’s top goalscorer had gone seven games without a goal before doubling the Whites’ lead at Elland Road.

It was immediately clear just how much the goal meant to the 26-year-old. And his teammates seemed just as delighted for the striker as they were for the fact that the scoreline had become 2-0.

And Leeds cult-hero Hughes could not praise the Englishman high enough after he tucked the ball home from close range to all but make the points safe.

“What can you say about Patrick Bamford? People have their criticisms of him, but me, every time I’ve come and watched him at this football club, he’s been an absolute talisman,” he told LUTV. “He tries, and keeps going. He misses chances, he scores chances. His movement’s exceptional. He’s a leader even though he doesn’t know he’s a leader.

“And that finish today is nothing short of what that young man deserves. He’s been top, top class every time I’ve watched Leeds.”

Bamford has been outstanding on so many occasions this season. Even when he has gone through a lengthy run without a goal, he has managed to often produce some crucial performances.

And his goals tally is still impressive. He has 13 goals to his name. Should he score two more, he would have scored enough goals to be Leeds’s top goalscorer in five of the last six campaigns.

It was also an important goal following Tyler Roberts’s brace against Hull City last weekend.

His critics may remain unconvinced. But the large majority will surely agree with Hughes and be delighted that Bamford has ended that wait for a goal.

And one final hot streak may make a huge difference as Leeds look to get across the line in the promotion race.
