Andy Hinchcliffe left absolutely stunned by what ‘world class’ Newcastle player did vs Tottenham

Newcastle United defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.

It’s been a tough week for The Magpies after failing to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi but heading into the international break, there’s now a good feeling around the place.

It was a pretty scrappy affair on Tyneside but ultimately, Eddie Howe’s men took their chances through Harvey Barnes and Alexander Isak.

Although, one Newcastle player was heavily criticised on commentary for his involvement in Tottenham’s equaliser.

Andy Hinchcliffe baffled by what Nick Pope did vs Tottenham

Sky Sports co-commentator Andy Hinchcliffe was absolutely stunned by Nick Pope’s decision to shovel the ball away just before Dan Burn’s own goal.

“What on earth is Nick Pope doing here?” Hinchcliffe said.

“Why is he trying to shovel it away? It’s (Maddison’s initial shot) not so accurate, so powerful that you have to parry it, surely you can collect it.

“He sees it all the way as well. It’s a gift really for Tottenham. The strike comes in, I just wonder why on earth Nick Pope is trying to shovel that ball away. He can collect it. That’s really poor goalkeeping.”

Pope, who’s been labelled ‘world class’ per the Chronicle, will be feeling very thankful for Isak, who netted the winner.

Newcastle have had a great start despite underwhelming performances

Newcastle have now opened up their Premier League account with seven points out of a possible nine which is a great return despite some underwhelming performances.

Howe’s men were pretty poor against Southampton and could’ve easily lost on the South Coast to Bournemouth had it not been for a controversial decision, which saw Dango Outtara’s stoppage time goal disallowed.

Even against Spurs, they were on the back foot for large potions of the game, so to take three points is certainly a positive.
