Andy Hinchcliffe compares Kalvin Phillips to N’Golo Kante and explains why he might have to leave Leeds United

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has been included in Sky Sports EFL Championship Team of the Season so far.

Plenty of the EFL commentary team picked their favourite players in the Championship in the 2019-20 season so far. Phillips nearly got a clean sweep in holding midfield.

The only pundit who didn’t pick him was Andy Hinchcliffe. The former Sheffield Wednesday defender went with Nottingham Forest’s Ben Watson instead. However, as he stated on the EFL Podcast, Hinchcliffe is still a massive fan of Phillips.

“Look at some of the Premier League players. N’Golo Kante when he was playing that role or Wilfried Ndidi at Leicester. He’s such a facilitator. That’s what Kalvin Phillips is.

“If Leeds don’t get promoted in the next 12 months or so Kalvin Phillips has to move to the Premier League. He’s too good a player to be playing the next four or five seasons in the Championship.“

Undoubtedly, Leeds United fans are aware of the fact that Phillips needs to be playing Premier League football from next season.

The hope is, that will be at Elland Road.

But with Leeds’ potential promotion campaign on hold and, possibly, in jeopardy the threat of Phillips heading elsewhere in the next available transfer window remains very real. Hopefully, Leeds get to push on in their promotion fight when, or if, football resumes this season. Then fans can be rewarded by seeing Phillips playing for Leeds in the Premier League.
