Andy Hinchcliffe claims Everton are miles away from top six

Sky Sports pundit Hinchcliffe has ranted about Everton’s performances in the Premier League this season and feels they are a long way off the top six right now.

The Toffees currently have just seven points from their opening six league games and have struggled in a number of games.

Marco Silva’s team did put in a decent away performance on Tuesday night to beat Championship opponents Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup third round, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring twice.

But the Merseyside club have lost back-to-back league games against Sheffield United and Bournemouth.

Ex-Everton player Hinchcliffe believes that his former side needs to improve massively in defence, especially after recent performances in the league.

“In the Premier League I’ve watched the last couple of performances… simply not good enough. Didn’t look like there was any kind of development from last season,” Hinchcliffe told The Debate Show, as quoted by Sky Sports’ Premier League Twitter account.

“I believe on paper they have some decent players, but they don’t seem to playing as a team. They are not defending anywhere near good enough, the goals they conceded at Bournemouth were diabolical.

“They have international players, Yerry Mina and Michael Keane just defending like schoolboys. That needs to change conceding goals too easily. They look a million miles away [from the top six].”

TBR’s View:

Everton’s problem from set-pieces is one that Silva needs to address on the training ground,

There was a slight release of pressure with the cup win on Tuesday night, but they face reigning Premier League champions Manchester City at the weekend at Goodison Park and fans may be concerned about the scoreline.

There will have to be major improvements if the club want to reach the top six, but that looks unlikely right now and there is a lot of competition.

Everton haven’t finished in the top six during the last five top-flight seasons and there is nothing yet to suggest they are in a much better place.
