Andy Halliday’s goal scoring cameo might help him wrestle his starting spot back from Borna Barisic

Andy Halliday came off the bench and scored to help Rangers record a comfortable victory in the Scottish Cup last night.

In the Fifth Round replay at Ibrox, Alfredo Morelos scored four and Halliday grabbed the other in a 5-0 win over 10-man Kilmarnock.

Borna Barisic was selected to start at left-back and Halliday replaced him with just over 15 minutes left on the clock.

And the boyhood Rangers fan, who has established himself as a cult hero and fan favourite, did not waste his chance on the pitch.

Halliday popped up in the box to sweep home Rangers’ third on 77 minutes, just before Morelos sealed the win and his hat-trick with two more goals.

With Jon Flanagan and Lee Wallace seemingly out of the picture, it appears to be a two-way scrap between Halliday and Barisic for the starting left-back spot.

Barisic joined from Osijek in the summer but has struggled with injuries this season, leaving Halliday in pole position.

But the Croatian left-back has returned to the starting line-up since the winter break, turning in some mixed displays.

Rangers fans seem undecided on whether Barisic or Halliday is the better option and it is not clear whether Steven Gerrard knows either.

But with the left-back spot up for grabs, Halliday boosted his hopes of regaining the starting jersey with a goal scoring cameo in the cup.
