Andy Halliday says rarely-used Rangers attacker better at finishing than Alfredo Morelos

Andy Halliday has told Open Goal that he reckons Greg Stewart is better at finishing than Colombian goal machine Alfredo Morelos – claiming Stewart is second only to Jermain Defoe at Rangers.

Stewart, 30, joined Rangers last summer but has since managed just three goals in 24 league and cup appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side. He started just six of his 24 outings for the Gers, rarely being given the chance to start up front.

Rarely seen in the starting line-up, Stewart was overlooked for Morelos and Defoe. Morelos netted 29 goals during 2019-20 while England veteran Defoe managed to find the back of the net an impressive 17 times in 32 matches.

It saw Stewart used out wide as he struggled to oust both Defoe and Morelos, but Halliday – who was recently released by the Gers – claimed that Stewart was second only to Defoe in terms of finishing and thinks he deserves more game time.

“Greg Stewart is one of the best trainers every day,” Halliday said. “I couldn’t speak highly enough of him. In terms of a finisher he’s probably second to Jermain Defoe as the second best at the football club.

“Everybody is talking about Lyndon Dykes for third choice striker but Greg can play there.”

TBR’s view – Does Stewart deserve more of a go?

The season prior to Stewart joining Rangers, he certainly showed his ability in front of goal – both scoring and assisting. He had a hand in 20 goals for both Kilmarnock and Aberdeen during two loan spells, scoring 10 and creating 10.

Though he is often pushed out wide because he can play there, perhaps Gerrard needs to place his faith in Stewart’s ability when a striker is needed. Halliday has got it bang on.
