Andy Halliday delivers worrying verdict about Rangers star ahead of January window

Andy Halliday has told Open Goal that he is concerned James Tavernier could leave Rangers in the January transfer window, claiming his goals and assists will have clubs considering a move for the Gers captain over the next few weeks.

Tavernier, 29, is in the form of his life. He has scored a whopping 14 goals from the right side of the defence – as well as laying on 10 assists. Yes, he is the club’s penalty taker, but he has still scored six times from open play.

Now with 266 appearances for Rangers under his belt – the former Newcastle man has 60 goals and 84 assists to his name. Not only that, but it appears the right-back has sorted his questionable defensive contributions out – which was a previous criticism.

Ex-Rangers star and recent teammate Halliday spoke of how clubs would be foolish not to take a look at Tavernier in January – and although he expects Tavernier to remain at Ibrox at least until the summer, he says there is a chance of an exit.

“Take away his penalties, he has still scored six goals,” Halliday said. “How can a team not be watching that. Everyone has their price, I think he would wait until the summer. But if a team sits down and offers double, triple your money – some people are going to get their head turned.”

TBR’s view – Tavernier would be silly to leave Rangers in January

The Gers are the closest they have ever been to winning the Scottish Premiership title since returning to the top tier in 2016. They are 11 ahead of Celtic, with their Old Firm rivals currently in turmoil.

Even if Tavernier was given the chance to play for one of the best Premier League sides, earning triple his money as per Halliday, Tavernier has got to stay at Rangers and set out to complete what he has been desperate to do for so many years – beat Celtic.

In terms of the summer, would Tavernier get the chance to play – and captain – a club that play week in, week out in Europe? A club where he is given freedom to score and create? Tavernier is probably best suited to stay, and become a legend at Rangers.
