Andy Halliday comments on Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard

Andy Halliday has told Open Goal’s Keeping The Ball On The Ground that he reckons Odsonne Edouard is “unhappy” at Celtic – and claims he feels sorry for Neil Lennon, who will be forced to get the best out of the striker.

Edouard, 22, has struggled to recapture his best Celtic form this season – netting just six goals in 13 appearances. The Frenchman has failed to help Celtic win crucial games throughout the campaign, when he has been available.

The pressure is on Celtic after they were knocked out of the Champions League, and sit nine points behind league leaders Rangers – though Celtic do have two games in hand over Steven Gerrard’s men.

Edouard was dropped by Lennon on Sunday as Celtic earned a 4-1 win over Motherwell at Fir Park, and ex-Rangers star Halliday reckons Edouard is “unhappy” at Celtic. He also believes it was the right decision to drop him.

“He has been Celtic’s key man for the last couple of years,” Halliday said. “But there comes a point where you need to say, you can’t keep playing unless you improve. Top players never miss an opportunity to show they’re top players.

“I don’t know if Edouard is unhappy, but he seems unhappy. But if you get picked, it is an opportunity to show you’re a top player. If I’m watching him, I’m thinking ‘he’s not as good as he thinks he is’. He’s Celtic’s best player.

“I feel for Neil Lennon because he will do everything to get Edouard back to top form.”

The Hoops face another difficult test next time out, as they travel to Lennon’s old side Hibernian on Saturday after the international break. Easter Road is a tricky place to go, and Celtic will need to be at their best.

Albian Ajeti was excellent against Motherwell and although he did not score, he was crucial in helping the Hoops overcome Motherwell. Leigh Griffiths is also on his way back, while Mo Elyounoussi scored a hat-trick.

Edouard is likely to remain on the bench, and Elyounoussi could partner Ajeti up top again.
