Everton legend Andy Gray has been criticising the club’s recruitment this summer.
The Toffees again spent big this summer in a bid to try and break into the Premier League top six. The likes of Fabian Delph, Andre Gomes, Alex Iwobi and Jean Philippe-Gbamin were all signed this summer as Everton looked to build on a positive end to last season.
The most eye-catching deal, however, was the signing of Moise Kean from Juventus. He arrived from Juventus in a reported (The Independent) £27.5 million deal to try and add firepower to the Everton attack.

However, Gray is not impressed with the recruitment. He feels Everton have not replaced Kurt Zouma and Phil Jagielka at centre-back. Acting in his role as Premier League pundit for beINSPORTS, the Cup Winner’s Cup winner from his days at Goodison Park also made it clear Everton were gambling on the teenage Italian.
“I don’t think the recruitment has been good enough. He’s left himself short at the back, centre-back area, really short.
“As for a centre-forward he has put all his eggs in one basket and that basket is called Moise Kean. If the young kid at 19 doesn’t come up with the goods than Everton are going to struggle to get goals.”
TBR’s View
Gray appeared to put the blame regarding recruitment at Marco Silva’s door, which seems harsh considering Marcel Brands is the chief when it comes to Everton’s transfer activity.
The Portuguese coach made it clear he wanted a centre-back brought in over the summer although Kean looks like a gamble everyone at Everton was willing to make.
So far the youngster has struggled to find his feet at Goodison Park whilst Everton’s lack of options at the back is now proving flawed as Michael Keane and Yerry Mina hit a rough patch.
Hopefully, Silva can soon get the best out of the players he has at his disposal at Everton. If not, they will continue to struggle in the manner they already have this season.
