Andy Goram makes claim concerning Rangers goalkeeper Alan McGregor

Andy Goram has told The Scottish Sun that he believes that Rangers would be struggling if they did not have Allan McGregor in goal this season, and insisted that the goalkeeper can continue for a number of years yet.

McGregor took little time last season to show that he was an inspired signing for the Gers. The 37-year-old was outstanding throughout the campaign, and often bailed Steven Gerrard’s side out when they did struggle.

This term however, Rangers find themselves going into the international break top of the Scottish Premiership. They are also in the group-stages of the Europa League, and beat Feyenoord in their opening clash.

Nevertheless, Goram suggested that it could be a significantly different story if McGregor was not between the sticks.

“Certainly without him this season I think Rangers would be struggling, because he’s making saves at vital times,” he told The Scottish Sun. “I was at the League Cup game against Livingston a couple of weeks ago when he made a couple of great saves.

“He’ll play for a while yet, no bother at all.”

Rangers would certainly be a weaker side without McGregor. And Goram’s suggestion that they may struggle may perhaps be in relation to the expectations at Ibrox.

There is surely no question that he has been the best signing from Gerrard’s tenure. But the Rangers boss will be hoping that his outfield players can continue to overshadow the veteran over the coming months.

McGregor was much busier than Rangers would have wanted last season. He has had to produce fewer heroics so far this term, and Gerrard will want his players to ensure that McGregor continues to have little to do as they look to capitalise on their current position.
