Andrew Dallas has told the Evening Times that the initial plan was to leave Rangers on loan before he left Ibrox on a permanent basis during the summer.

Dallas went into the summer as one of the young players looking to push themselves onto Steven Gerrard’s radar heading into the Englishman’s second year with the club.

However, by the time the deadline passed, Dallas had moved on. He joined League Two side Cambridge United on a two-year deal, as confirmed by BBC Sport.

While it did appear that Dallas had a huge uphill task on his hands trying to get into the Rangers first-team, it did seem to catch of plenty of supporters by surprise when it was announced that he was leaving permanently.

And Dallas explained that he was initially expecting to leave the Gers on a temporary basis.

“I was looking to go out on loan originally at the start of the season and we played Cambridge in a friendly,” he told the Evening Times. “I played and scored so Murty came up to me and told me that the gaffer liked the look of me and would take me on loan.

“Since they were up in Scotland anyway, I went to train with them for a few days and then they became interested in taking me on a permanent.”

TBR’s View

Dallas looks to have the potential to play at a higher level. But he is yet to really prove that Rangers may have made the wrong decision letting him go.

He is yet to score his first goal for Cambridge. And he has struggled to force his way into the starting lineup in England’s fourth tier. Meanwhile, of course, Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe are both enjoying frightening runs of form.

It looks therefore, to have been a move that was best for all parties. Even if Dallas had left on loan, it would have been incredibly difficult for the 20-year-old to earn that chance at Ibrox at some stage down the line.
