Andy Cole thinks 'very intelligent' Tottenham star is beginning to lose his speed
Andy Cole has told the Kelly & Wright Show that Tottenham star Harry Kane is beginning to lose his pace, but that he is “very intelligent”.
Kane, 28, netted a stunning hat-trick on Thursday night – coming on as a substitute in the Europa Conference League against Slovenian side Mura.
His three goals come after a turbulent start to the season for the England skipper. Seemingly unfocused, Kane missed out on a move to Man City.
Pundits have questioned his body language, his commitment to the cause. Some have criticised his desire to drop deeper, and his lack of movement.
But Manchester United legend Cole thinks Kane is being “intelligent”. He thinks Kane has lost half a yard of pace, and that is why he drops deeper.
“Kane is very intelligent. He drops in even more so now, because he has lost a half-yard of pace,” Cole told the Kelly & Wrighty Show.
“You won’t see Kane going one v one against a defender, he would rather drop deep and let the wide man go beyond him.”
Cole on Tottenham ace Kane: Is there genius behind madness?
Since the North London derby defeat to Arsenal, Kane has come in for criticism for his positioning, movement and lack of impact.
But perhaps Cole’s explanation as to why Kane is dropping deeper explains why he is doing just that – he is losing speed. Cole could be right.
It is tricky to remember the last time Kane took players on, one v one – like he used to. But what is clear, is that Kane is England’s best finisher.
Yes, dropping deeper can help Spurs and bring Kane into the game more. But it takes his lethal finishing away – something Spurs must bring back.
