Newcastle United are on the verge of signing Andy Carroll on a free transfer. A report by The Chronicle shows an exclusive photograph of Carroll pictured at St James’ Park ahead of his return to Tyneside.

Carroll is set to return to Newcastle eight-and-a-half-years after leaving his boyhood club. Since then, his career has taken him to Liverpool and West Ham but he is now a free agent.

West Ham decided to let the 9-cap ex-England striker leave after another injury-ravaged campaign. But he has proven his fitness to Newcastle and has agreed to take a pay cut to seal his return.

Carroll’s deal is close to completion and this report adds that it will be a pay-as-you-play style contract. This is a perfect arrangement for the Magpies, who are taking a risk on Carroll because of his injury record.

The 30-year-old will join Joelinton, Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto in Newcastle’s striker department. The club lost Salomon Rondon, Ayoze Perez and Joselu last summer but have brought in Joelinton and now Carroll.

Steve Bruce has a variety of options now as Carroll is a target man. On his day, he is unplayable with his aerial threat and physicality. But Newcastle fans will be hoping he stays fit.
