Andros Townsend thinks Ryan Mason should get permanent Tottenham role, explains why

Andros Townsend has told TalkSPORT that Daniel Levy should hand Ryan Mason the Tottenham Hotspur job on a more permanent basis. Spurs have failed to get Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso in recent weeks. Now, they are back to square one and it is unclear who they want.

Mason showed glimpses that he had steadied the ship after a turbulent spell under Jose Mourinho. He failed to get Spurs into the Europa League – a tall order – and lost the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City. But there were signs of improvement and Gareth Bale, among others, were happier.

Discussing who should get the job, Townsend believes Mason deserves a chance. He feels it would benefit Tottenham if Mason was given the job for a season – and the search for a long-term replacement continues. He prefers that to hiring someone on a big contract, and then having to pay out.

“If you can’t get your first three or four choices, and you’re looking at a manager like Gattuso, why not give Ryan Mason the job for a season – and then get your top target in next season,” Townsend said. “It is better than giving another manager a three, four-year deal and sacking him.

“That will see them pay more compensation. Why not give it to a guy who can steady the ship. He has proved he can steady the ship. He handled the Kane stuff, on the pitch players how he is similar to Pochettino – similar methods, trying to get Spurs back to where they want to be.

“Appoint Mason, take your time, and then bring in their main target December, January, next summer. It saves them having to pay out so much compensation.”

Townsend makes a good point regarding Mason and Tottenham

Any manager appointed now will be far from Tottenham and Fabio Paratici’s first choice. They will know that, Spurs will know that and the fans will know that. So, bringing in Mason on a longer interim basis will give Spurs the time and freedom to find the right man when he is available.

Right now, Spurs have exhausted the best out-of-work options out there. Rafa Benitez is too similar to Jose Mourinho, while Conte, Fonseca and Gattuso are the best of the rest. Ernesto Valverde has been linked and he would be a top appointment. But Mason gives Tottenham time.
