Andros Townsend says Crystal Palace ‘fortunate’ in win over Leeds United

Andros Townsend has told TalkSPORT (7.05am, Tuesday) that Crystal Palace were fortunate in scoring some of their four goals against Leeds United on Saturday afternoon – as the Eagles inflicted a second successive 4-1 Leeds defeat.

Goals from Scott Dann, Eberechi Eze and Jordan Ayew, and a Helder Costa own goal, cancelled out Patrick Bamford’s volley. It was only a handful of days after Leeds had been hammered 4-1 by Leicester City.

Of Palace’s four goals, two came from set-pieces with Dann heading home and Eze curling a sumptuous free-kick into the top corner. Costa’s own goal was a freakish deflection, while Ayew’s goal came with Leeds pushing forward.

Palace winger Townsend started the match and lasted 71 minutes, and he reckons his side were lucky in the goals they scored – but praised both Roy Hodgson for his analysis, and Leeds for showing no fear since promotion.

“It was fortunate the way the goals have gone in. We did a lot of analysis because there have been a lot of plaudits for Leeds. Hats off to Hodgson and his coaching staff, because we got it bang on,” Townsend said.

“We had the benefit of watching Leicester, who play similarly to us. It’s incredible they’ve come up to the Premier League with no fear, it was exciting to experience the Leeds style. We knew there would be places in behind.

TBR’s view – Did Leeds deserve more against Palace?

Many have spoken about it, but Bamford’s first goal – ruled out by VAR – has drawn more criticism on the technology. Bamford is onside apart from a part of his arm, where he is pointing Mateusz Klich to pass the ball.

It was a barbaric decision, given the arm is not a goalscoring part of the body. That goal would have seen Leeds cancel out Dann’s header, and level the game at 1-1. Instead, Leeds were frustrated.

It may have played a part in Robin Koch conceding a foul on the edge of the Leeds area – in which Eze scored to make it 2-0 to Palace. Leeds can count themselves unfortunate, but the Premier League is a cut-throat business.
