Andrew Gutman believes he is ready to play for Celtic

Celtic newbie Andrew Gutman has been discussing his first impressions of training with the club.

The 22-year-old left-back was signed by Celtic on a free transfer back in January. He arrived from the Chicago Fire’s development side in a three-and-a-half year deal.

It was certainly something of a coup as far as Celtic were concerned. Mainly, because Gutman had been on the radar of Old Firm rivals Rangers.

With a work permit an issue, Celtic loaned Gutman back to his homeland. The US talent joined Charlotte Independence on loan for the 2019 USL Championship season.

But he is currently with Celtic for pre-season as the Bhoys aim to slowly integrate him into the squad.

Speaking to the Chicago Tribune this week, Gutman has admitted the standard at Celtic has been something of a reality check.

“This experience has definitely slapped me in the face and made me grow up faster.

“I’ve wanted to play professionally from a very early age, and I felt that playing on the European platform was the best fit for me.

His current loan spell at Charlotte is seemingly over. The player himself is pleased to have not been sent back out on loan just yet.

“I think I’ve done well. I haven’t been sent back out on loan yet. I feel I can play with these guys, but I have to wake up every day and be able to perform at my very best. That’s a tough ask for anyone.”

However, gaining a work permit for Gutman is likely to be problematic. With that in mind, a loan deal is the most likely avenue for the talented left-back.

It is a shame for Gutman, as with doubts surrounding Kieran Tierney’s future, he might have been handed a chance sooner than expected.

Hopefully he can have a productive season, wherever he is playing, and progress into a player worthy of the Celtic first-team.
