Andres Iniesta recalls fond memories of playing against Celtic
Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta has told Four Four Two (Print Edition, Issue 310, March 2020; page 11) that playing against Celtic was an experience that he will never forget.
The 35-year-old is still playing for J-League outfit Vissel Kobe but prior to that spent several years with Barcelona.
He played 674 times for the Catalan giants, registering 140 assists during his time with the club.
In the latest issue of Four Four Two, he was quizzed about a famous win for Celtic against Barcelona in 2012.
The Hoops had just 16 per cent possession but ran out 2-1 winners thanks to goals by Victor Wanyama and Tony Watt.
Iniesta played in that game and holds memories of the famous clash, despite it being on the wrong end of the defeat.
He told Four Four Two: “I remember that well; one goal from a corner and another on the counter. Football is wonderful for reasons like these – the team who has the ball or the better players doesn’t always win.
“I’ll never forget playing against Celtic either; the atmosphere is one of the best in the world. I was fortunate to play there several times and it was always so intense. It was an honour to play amid such incredible noise.”
Celtic would reach the knockout stages of the Champions League during the 2012/13 campaign.
The Hoops came up against a formidable Juventus side in the last 16 and were dumped out 5-0 on aggregate after two legs.
Iniesta won pretty much everything there is to win during his time at Barcelona.
He won the Champions League four times, the Spanish Cup on six occasions and lifted the league title nine times.
Iniesta also scored the winning goal during the World Cup Final in 2010 when Spain beat Holland after extra-time.
The Spaniard did enjoy better days against Celtic as a player. He scored two goals against the Hoops during his career and tasted victory over them on five occasions.
