Andrea Dossena has urged Liverpool to sign Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly during an interview with Radio Musica TV – as per Inside Futbol – claiming they are one of the only financially-stable clubs able to spend big on a player like Koulibaly.
Koulibaly, 28, has reaffirmed his status as one of the best central defenders in European football this season with another excellent campaign – even if Napoli have struggled. The Serie A side do remain unbeaten in the Champions League, though.
French outlet Le10Sport have claimed Liverpool and Manchester United have tabled offers to sign Koulibaly, as have Newcastle – who have offered Koulibaly a whopping £200,000-a-week contract. Another (Le 10 Sport) report claim he is worth £90m.
Former Liverpool defender Dossena, who also played for Napoli during his career, spoke about Koulibaly’s future and reckons the Senegalese giant should make the switch between his former sides – claiming Liverpool can afford the defender.
“If the league resumes, Napoli will struggle to qualify for the Champions League, so they will have to sell some important players,” Dossena said. “The most eligible players who could be sold are Koulibaly and [Fabian] Ruiz.
“Klopp is missing one piece to complete a stratospheric squad and the Koulibaly-van Dijk pairing could become a big barrier. Liverpool have no economic problems and therefore a deal with the English club would be within reach.”
TBR’s view – Koulibaly would be a stunning addition
Though it would be enormously harsh on Joe Gomez. The England international has been rock solid for Liverpool at the back and with every game, the former Charlton defender looks more and more accomplished.
Learning from van Dijk, Gomez has come on leaps and bounds and is now regarded as one of England’s best defenders. But the chance to combine third-placed Ballon d’Or star van Dijk with Koulibaly is something Liverpool cannot pass up.
