'Very interested': Journalist says former Chelsea boss now wants Aston Villa job

Aston Villa are looking for a replacement for Steven Gerrard, after the club moved to sack the former Liverpool midfielder this week.

Gerrard lasted around a year in charge of Villa but a run of dire results and some sub-par performances overall has seen the Villa board act before the World Cup. The search is now on for his replacement, with the likes of Ruben Amorim and Mauricio Pochettino among the big names mentioned.

However, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, former Chelsea and Spurs boss Andre Villas Boas could be another name to throw his name in the hat. Speaking on the Off The Ball Podcast, Jacobs claims Villas Boas has his eyes on the Villa job as he looks for a return to football.

“AVB (Andre Villas-Boas) too. AVB is a very distant candidate and I don’t think Villa are looking at him, but he’s very interested in Villa because I understand that he still thinks he has something to prove in the Premier League,” Jacobs said.

Jacobs does say that Villa aren’t actively looking at Villas Boas. However, after two failed spells in England already and being moved on by Marseille, the 45-year-old clearly has something to prove over in the Premier League.

TBR’s View: Villa Can Do Better

Given the calibre of name being mentioned in relation to the Aston Villa job, it does feel like the club could go and get someone who is more of a sure thing than Villas Boas.

He came to England with the big reputation but simply never delivered and he’s barely delivered since either.

So while he might fancy the move back to the Premier League and think he has a point to prove, Aston Villa will do well to stay away here and pursue some of the other names mentioned.
