Tottenham Hotspur face an uphill battle in the Champions League after losing their semi-final first-leg tie against Ajax last night. Spurs will need to be at their absolute best in Amsterdam next week to secure a final spot.
For all the praise Ajax’s outfield players rightly received for this performance, their goalkeeper Andre Onana also deserves a mention. Though rarely challenged, his aerial domination, confidence with the ball at feet and leadership from between the posts was sensational throughout.
It is clear this is a keeper who has been in both the Ajax and Barcelona youth systems. He is a modern-style stopper with supreme confidence.

He certainly showed why, reportedly, Tottenham Hotspur see him as a long-term successor to Hugo Lloris.
Back in December, Voetbal International suggested Mauricio Pochettino was a huge fan of the Cameroonian star. He reportedly sees him one day taking Lloris’ place at Tottenham. Barcelona have also been credited with an interest. His former club, according to Mundo Deportivo, considered a €20 million (£17.2 million) move for the summer.
Since then, Onana has signed a new deal at Ajax, making a summer move anywhere look unlikely. However, with Lloris starting to fade, Tottenham are right to keep him on their radar.
The 23-year-old looks capable of becoming one of the best in Europe. Spurs are right to have him on their longlist when it comes to player recruitment.
