Andre Onana comments on future and Tottenham clash

Cameroonian international goalkeeper Andre Onana has been discussing his future at Ajax. The talented stopper is considered a long-term target for Tottenham Hotspur. It was reported toward the end of last year that Onana was a potential long-term target for Spurs as a potential replacement for Hugo Lloris. 

The report, from Voetbal International, did not suggest an imminent deal. However, they did suggest that Onana was one of the club’s main targets for when Lloris, now 32-years-old, approaches the end of his Tottenham career. 

Speaking to NOS this weekend, the Cameroonian reacted to speculation he might be interesting Bayern Munich in a similar vein, as a potential long-term replacement for Manuel Neuer. But he suggested he was not currently thinking about an Ajax exit. 

“But I’m happy at Ajax. I don’t look at how life is in the future, but live from day to day and try to be the best. Time will tell when I leave.

“Besides: we don’t know how tomorrow’s day will go. If we knew that, life wouldn’t be fun.”

Onana will, of course, be known to Tottenham fans. He featured against Spurs in the Champions League semi-final last season, conceding a Lucas Moura hat-trick as Tottenham performed a miracle. 

He spoke of the game with NOS, and the error he made in the build-up to one of Tottenham’s goals. 

“If we look at the match against Tottenham Hotspur last year. No, no, we can talk about it, I don’t mind. It’s good to talk about it sometimes.

“We were only thirty seconds away from the Champions League final.”

TBR’s View

Onana may not have covered himself in glory in the second-leg of the game with Tottenham last season. However, he was arguably one of the best goalkeepers in the competition last term up until that point. 

Lloris does not currently show any signs of making his Tottenham exit but he does turn 33 at the end of the year and his performances have undoubtedly dipped over the past 18 months or so. 

Onana would be a great option long-term. So whilst he is currently happy remaining in Amsterdam, there is no doubt that Tottenham should continue to keep tabs on the talented stopper.
