Andre Gomes has undoubtedly had an impact on Everton fans. The Portuguese international, on loan from Barcelona, put in a string of impressive performances for the Toffees after making his league debut against Crystal Palace in October. He went on to play the full 90 minutes in his next eight games and his performance in defeat against Liverpool at Anfield was probably the best from an Everton player this season.
According to Mundo Deportivo, he is Everton’s if they can splash out £22 million to make the deal permanent. Before Christmas, every Everton fan would have said yes to such a deal.
However, the cracks are starting to show. Gomes was known for his inconsistent displays at Barcelona, it is what made him so frustrating to Catalan supporters and so dispensable at the Nou Camp.
Everton fans are now seeing that side. Performances against Tottenham, Brighton, Leicester and yesterday against Southampton have been far from good enough. He was hauled off in all of those games with the fixture simply passing him by. At St Mary’s yesterday, he could barely string a pass together.
His distribution goes astray, he neglects defensive duties and looks sluggish. When games get on top of Gomes, he struggles to snap out of it.
Gomes has not been helped by the general malaise of the entire Everton team in that period. Gylif Sigurdsson in front of him is currently offering very little. Some Everton fans would actually like to see Gomes further forward in that role, which could be a boost to his ailing form.
He remains a fan favourite and his quality is clear for all to see. However, Everton will hope he soon finds his imperious best form again. If not, many will feel the club could get spooked over that £22 million price-tag.
