It’s not easy for an 18-year-old on his second Premier League start to dominate a midfield battle against the likes of Yaya Toure and prove to be key in his side thrashing a side managed by Pep Guardiola, but Tom Davies made it seem like that on Sunday afternoon.
With a goal and an assist to his name, Davies was central to much of Everton’s success, with his pass also setting up Kevin Mirallas to cut back to allow Romelu Lukaku. That defence splitting pass before half-time set the Toffees up for what would be a superb afternoon, and Davies involvement was indicative of his top quality performance.
Having joined the club at just 10-years-old, Davies has been a revelation for Ronald Koeman in the last few weeks, teaming up alongside Gareth Barry in central midfield and showing what he is capable of. Tough tackling for much of the first half, in the second he was afforded more freedom to roam forward, which he did to devastating affect when he made the most of a poor Pablo Zabaleta clearance to run through and find Kevin Mirallas to make it 2-0 just moments after the break.
To make it a dream afternoon for the youngster, he added to the tally and made it three not long after. His goal was superbly taken, winning the ball deep in his own half and carrying it to the edge of the Manchester City box before being pushed down as he laid the ball off, only to spring back up to pounce when played in with no-one near him before calmly slotting past Claudio Bravo in the Citizens’ goal.
Davies certainly seems to be one for Evertonians and English football fans alike to keep an eye on, alongside Ademola Lookman, the recent £10 million signing from Charlton, who added a fourth. The future certainly seems bright for the Toffees, but based on the man of the match display from Davies on Sunday afternoon, his future could be the brightest.
