Analysing Sergio Aguero's incredible striking performance for Manchester City against Watford
Sergio Aguero delivered a man-of-the-match performance against Watford, as the Manchester City striker scored a hat-trick. This was a pleasing performance for the Argentine as he has now re-established himself in the first team. There were reports that Gabriel Jesus would be the premier striker at the club, but Pep Guardiola has found a system that can fit both and the results are devastating. In their last three fixtures in all competitions, City have scored 15 goals without conceding.
The Argentine has been a consistent performer for the club since joining, but this new system could see him reach a new level in a City shirt. Against Watford, he was at the centre of everything that was good about the team in the final third. He attempted eight shots and made three key passes. That has been the most notable change in Aguero’s game as he is now less selfish and creates opportunities for his team-mates.
There were several impressive parts to his performance, but his form in front of goal was most noticeable. Aguero scored three times and they all resulted from intelligent movement to find space to exploit. The first was a flicked header and although he isn’t known for his aerial prowess, he can threaten in the air. The next two displayed his cool head in front of goal and finishing ability. There are few better in the Premier League at taking a chance that comes their way. If City continue to create chances, the 29-year-old will continue to find the back of the net.
Manchester City’s game relies on keeping possession and it is important that every player is intelligent when they have the ball. Aguero’s distribution has improved at the start of this season and he now rarely concedes possession. Against Watford, he completed 86% of his passes and made good decisions on the ball. He is always positive and looking to move the team into a more dangerous position in the opposition half. Although Gabriel Jesus has been catching the eye, his pass success rate was only 70%. This underlines the importance of Aguero to the City attack.
It was thought that Aguero would struggle to get regular game-time, but he has stepped up his game and adapted to the coaching methods of Guardiola. He is once again the main goal threat in the City team and has the potential to beat his previous best of 26 goals in a Premier League campaign. That won’t be easy for the striker, but he looks incredible at the moment and no team will relish the prospect of facing him.
