‘An investment by the club’: Jose Mourinho names the ’emerging’ Spurs talent he wants to improve

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has described Ryan Sessegnon as an “investment” by Spurs which he and his coaches want to help improve.

Sessegnon joined Tottenham from Fulham last summer to much fanfare, given his superb performances for the West London club in their 2017-18 promotion-winning campaign.

However, the 20-year-old’s maiden season at Spurs turned out to be a disappointment, with a hamstring injury keeping him out of action until November and little game time after that.

Sessegnon’s final tally in 2019-20 stood at 12 competitive senior appearances in all competitions, of which six were in the Premier League and three in the Champions League.

With Danny Rose seemingly on the verge of leaving Tottenham, Mourinho has now appeared to suggest that Ben Davies would be first-choice at left-back, with Sessegnon as deputy.

“It’s very difficult for (Rose) to stay here with us when for me it’s clear that Ben Davies is such a solid left-back,” Mourinho is quoted by Football London as saying.

“Ryan Sessegnon is an investment by the club, an emerging player that we want to improve.

“So it’s very difficult for Danny to stay with us this season. If he goes to Serie A and Genoa I think it’ll be very good for him.”

Earlier this summer, The Telegraph claimed that Spurs were considering sending Sessegnon out on loan, while Sky Sports claimed that Barcelona were eyeing the talented prodigy.

With Rose reportedly on the brink of a move away, however, it looks as though the former Fulham ace will have a role to play this season.

Given just how impressive Sessegnon was in 2017-18, you can’t forget that he’s still so young and, as such, will require further coaching and experience to progress.

Mourinho is a coach with high standards who demands the best talent and work-rate, so for him to give the England Under-21 ace such confidence shows just how much of a talent he is.
