Francesco Miniero has told Calciomercato.it that it would be ‘an honour’ to seal a transfer to Napoli for Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn.

The agent works for Muy Manero, who look after Bergwijn’s interests in Italy. He has also explained how a move to Inter Milan fell through last summer.

Bergwijn was subject to interest from the San Siro last year after Antonio Conte stood down after winning Serie A. But the arrival of Simone Inzaghi over candidates like Luciano Spalletti meant a deal was off.

The Re-Writing Of History At Manchester United

Inzaghi’s desire to play with three centre-halves meant Bergwijn would not suit his plans for Inter. So, the Nerazzurri looked to alternative options to improve the Italian’s ranks than to sign an out-and-out winger.

Had Spalletti, for example, joined, Miniero is confident Bergwijn would have left Tottenham for Inter in the last transfer window. Now, he would like the Dutchman join Napoli, but also stresses a deal is not imminent.

Miniero would love Napoli transfer for Tottenham winger Bergwijn

Bergwijn’s Tottenham future is in some doubt in the January transfer window having failed to establish himself under Conte. Spurs’ January 2020 signing from PSV Eindhoven has only played 39-minutes in the Premier League so far.

The £27m Dutchman has only played 310-minutes in the top-flight all term, too, including Nuno Espirito Santo’s tenure. He has also only managed 127-minutes in the Carabao Cup and 137-minutes in the Europa Conference League.

Miniero would now love to secure Bergwijn a transfer away from Tottenham and to Napoli in January. But the third-place Serie A side are not showing concrete interest in a deal as of yet.

“Bergwijn was very close to Inter, but then in the summer he left Spalletti,” Miniero said. “If a coach who played with 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 had arrived, he would have arrived at the Nerazzurri.

“Seeing him in Naples would be an honour, but there is really nothing.”

Reports by The Times have cited Ajax with an interest in signing Bergwijn in a loan transfer from Tottenham this month. De Telegraaf also reported the Eredivisie giant’s interest in the 24-year-old.
