American media hails Leeds star Tyler Adams after USA vs Wales

Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams was the star of the show for the USA as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Wales at the World Cup last night.

Timothy Weah opened the scoring for the USA in what was a truly dominant first-half display. Gareth Bale pulled one back late in the game to secure a point following a spirited comeback in the second half.

The USMNT would’ve been disappointed to have not won the game, but skipper Adams can hold his head up.

American media hails Leeds star Tyler Adams after USA vs Wales

Adams started in the middle of the park for the USA and he was magnificent.

The 23-year-old was everywhere. He was good on the ball, excellent positionally and his tackling was arguably the best we’ve seen in this edition of the World Cup so far.

The American media was really impressed with the USMNT’s display against Wales last night, especially in the first half. Adams, unsurprisingly, was their pick of the bunch.

CBS Sports gave the Leeds star an 8/10 rating and wrote: “The best player on the field.

“The captain was cool and composed. Always played smart, checking to the ball, instructing those around him, and leading by example. He had a late tackle on Bale that was quite impressive. He’s the heart and soul of this team.”

USA Today’s Pro Soccer Wire rated him 7.5/10 and wrote: “Adams set the tone by winning a ferocious 50/50 challenge within the first 60 seconds, putting USMNT old heads that remember Jens Jeremies crashing into Claudio Reyna seconds into a group stage clash with Germany in 1998. at ease.

“In many ways, this was a prototypical Adams performance, with his quick reads and physical speed ending Wales breakouts and closing down passing lanes faster than the opponent expected.

“The Wales choice to bring Moore into the game and go long was in part due to the fact that they were simply going nowhere trying to play through or around Adams, who was probably the best player on the field for either team.”

What do the stats say?

Everyone who watched the game last night knows how good Adams was, and the stats back that.

In his 90 minutes on the pitch, the 23-year-old Leeds star had 86 touches of the ball and completed 62 passes at an impressive accuracy rate of 90 per cent. He also completed four of his five attempted long passes, which is an excellent return. (SofaScore)

Adams also won more tackles (5) and covered a greater distance (13.13 km) than any other player at the 2022 FIFA World Cup so far (LUFC Data), which is just excellent.

The £20 million (Sky Sports) Leeds paid for Adams is looking more and more like a bargain now.
