Ambrose amazed by Spurs star Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this season

Darren Ambrose has told talkSPORT that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is now doing something you never thought you would see by making the Tottenham Hotspur midfield tick as he discussed the current problems in Antonio Conte’s squad.

Something is still not clicking for Spurs right now. They remain fourth in the Premier League table. However, they have now conceded the opening goal in their last nine games in all competitions.

They needed two goals to fight back and earn a point against Brentford on Boxing Day. And it was Hojbjerg who scored the equaliser, showing real composure when the chance presented itself inside the penalty area.

Ambrose amazed by Hojbjerg form

Hojbjerg has been superb for Tottenham, particularly since Rodrigo Bentancur’s arrival. And he has certainly stepped up for Spurs as they continue to try and find their best form this season.

Certainly, Ambrose suggested that he has seen a side of the Denmark international that he was not expecting as he assessed the state of the squad.

“Bissouma, he’s not setting the world alight at the moment. But there’s a good player there. We saw that at Brighton. He’ll come good. Hojbjerg seems to be one that’s making it tick in the midfield, which you never thought that would happen,” he told talkSPORT.

It is remarkable to see how Hojbjerg has adapted his game. Previously, he was seen as quite a defensive midfielder, providing cover to the backline.

However, no player in the Premier League has made a greater number of progressive passes so far this season, according to FBRef. Meanwhile, only four players have made more passes into the final third.

So it should come as little surprise that he has already achieved his best ever tally in front of goal for Spurs. He scored two league goals in each of his first two Premier League campaigns.

This time around, he has four in 15 games. Only Harry Kane has found the back of the net more often for Tottenham this season.

Things certainly need to improve for Spurs if they are going to achieve anything. But there is little doubt that Hojbjerg is stepping up in a big way.
