'Amazing turnaround': Some Liverpool fans buzzing after hearing who could feature tonight
A number of Liverpool fans have welcomed the inclusion of Reds academy midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner in the travelling pack to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League tonight.
Dixon-Bonner, a “very creative player“, joined the Liverpool setup from Arsenal’s academy in 2015, initially playing for the Under-16s.
In the 2017-18 campaign, he made a big impression with the Under-18s under the guidance of his hero Steven Gerrard.
Dixon-Bonner signed his first professional contract at Liverpool in 2018, and in 2018-19, he was part of the victorious FA Youth Cup squad.
He scored a penalty during the shootout victory over Manchester City in the final.
Dixon-Bonner is currently a staple in the Under-23s, though competition from the likes of Leighton Clarkson, Jake Cain and Tyler Morton mean he’s had limited game time.
He made his first-team debut for Liverpool against Shrewsbury Town in 2020, coming on as a late substitute in the Reds’ FA Cup fourth round replay win at Anfield.
This past summer, Dixon-Bonner featured on trial for League One side Portsmouth, but a move didn’t materialise.
Here is what some Liverpool fans made of his inclusion in the travelling contingent to face Atleti:
