‘Amazing’ Tottenham target could go for free next year instead of moving now

After a long summer, the transfer window is coming to an end.

Deadline day is almost upon us, and, as ever, there are still a few sagas that need a conclusion.

Ivan Toney has been linked with a move away from Brentford for a long time now, but, as of yet, he hasn’t got his move.

Toney has been strongly linked to Tottenham recently, but apparently, he may not be on the move this summer.

Indeed, according to Duncan Castles, speaking on The Transfers Podcast, Brentford may actually run Toney’s contract down this season if they don’t receive an adequate fee.

Ivan Toney could leave for free

Castles shared what he knows about the ‘amazing’ striker.

“There are complications in terms of his expectations on salary that have prevented a move from happening. There are now conversations with Chelsea over a deal. My understanding is that Toney is paid £20,000-a-week by Brentford and he’s been asking for £125,000-a-week from Premier League clubs,” Castles said.

“I don’t think this is clear cut in that Brentford will definitely sell. My guidance is that if they are not offered the money they expect they are prepared to run the contract down rather than sell for a discount they think is unacceptable.”

Brentford should keep Ivan Toney

Brentford may keep hold of Ivan Toney, and this isn’t the worst idea in the world.

Toney is being valued in some circles at £30m, and, to be honest, one season of Ivan Toney is worth more than £30m to Brentford.

Make no mistake about it, Toney’s influence at Brentford could be the difference between survival and relegation.

Staying in the Premier League is worth more than £100m to Brentford, so why jeopardise that for the sake of anything less than £50m towards deadline day.

Toney could still leave, but, it wouldn’t be a bad idea if Brentford did end up keeping the England international.
