‘Amazing’: Hugo Lloris says one Tottenham player was absolutely ‘great’ against Marseille last night

Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris has paid tribute to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after his match-winning goal in Marseille.

Spurs were already heading into the last 16 of the Champions League with the 1-1 draw they had before the Dane broke away in stoppage time.

But Hojbjerg fired home to put Spurs top of the group and potentially ensure a slightly gentler draw in the first knockout round.

Tottenham were abject in the first half and went in 1-0 down at half-time, before Clement Lenglet’s header brought the game level.

Lloris on Hojbjerg

Lloris was interviewed by Spurs’ official website after the game and paid tribute to the match-winner, who has been in improved goalscoring form this season.

He said: “Pierre did an amazing finish and deserves this goal.

“He had a great performance. But all the team deserve credit – not only the players on the pitch, but all the group and the coaching staff.

“It was not easy to see our manager in the stand, so it’s a great feeling.”

It has been tumultuous few weeks for Spurs, but they have come from behind to win their last two matches.

That is hugely important for momentum and confidence, and so is the fact they will be playing in the Champions League in 2023.

They put in a huge amount of effort to get into Europe’s premier competition last season and going out at the first hurdle would have been a major blow.

Hojbjerg was as important as any player in getting the job done and his late, late goal could be vital when the draw for the next round is confirmed.
