‘Amazing’: Antonio Conte admits he was blown away by £10m Newcastle player yesterday

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has admitted he was seriously impressed with Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope yesterday.

Newcastle became the first side since April to beat Spurs at home, coming away from north London with a 2-1 win.

Conte spoke to BBC Sport after the match to assess his side’s defeat.

It was a tale of two goalkeepers with Hugo Lloris’s performance also under the spotlight.

The French keeper was adjudged not to have been fouled by Callum Wilson for Newcastle’s first goal.

He was then beaten from a narrow angle by Miguel Almiron as the Magpies doubled their lead.

At the other end, Pope was keeping his side in the match making three saves, and sweeping the ball up successfully.

Conte said he was impressed with Pope’s performance, particularly the two ‘amazing’ saves he made.

Pope has been one of the signings of the summer, and has helped Newcastle keep the joint-most clean sheets in the league.

His £10m fee, signed from relegated Burnley, is already looking like a bargain.

Conte impressed with Pope

The Tottenham manager spoke after the match, and thought his side probably deserved a point at full-time.

“In the end I think that at least a draw was the fair result in this game,” Conte said.

“We started very well and created chances to score, but I think their goalkeeper has made two amazing saves.

“In our best moment they scored a strange goal, that I don’t want to comment about the decision.

“In a few minutes we conceded a second goal and then in the second half the mood wasn’t so high.

“But my players showed great a reaction and commitment.

“I don’t have anything to complain about their attitude.

“The first moment was very positive for us as we created many chances, but only Pope saved Newcastle.”

With just a few weeks left until the World Cup, Pope will be hoping to continue putting in his best performances.

There are doubts about his performances in an England shirt, after he deputised for Jordan Pickford last month.

However, Eddie Howe is very pleased with the 30-year-old, saying he wouldn’t swap him for any other goalkeeper.

Conte may be starting to question his own goalkeeper, but admitted he was impressed with Pope’s performance.
