Manchester United are working hard to add to the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves.
The Brazilian has moved to Old Trafford in a £62.5m deal, and Manchester United are trying to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford to add to the South American attacker.
However, the Brentford No.19 is a similar player to Amad Diallo in the way that he cuts inside from the right flank onto his stronger left foot, scoring 20 Premier League goals last season in that area.
It therefore raises question marks over where the Ivory Coast international would play under Ruben Amorim if Mbeumo does join Manchester United, although sources have now provided TBR Football with some information on the situation.
Amad Diallo likely to become right wing-back on a permanent basis under Ruben Amorim
Graeme Bailey – Chief Correspondent at TBR Football – has now shared what he knows about how a move for Mbeumo could impact on Amad.
He said: “In some ways (there are concerns about his position in the attack given the new signings) but Amad probably knows he’s heading towards playing the right wing-back role.
“If you recall, in Amorim’s first game in charge against Ipswich Town, that’s where Amad played. When he says right wing-back role, a wing-back role in a Ruben Amorim system is not the wing-back role that we usually associate with English football.
“I think the (Matheus) Cunha and (Bryan) Mbeumo signings, and (Joshua) Zirkzee still being there, tell us that the chances of Amad playing as an attacking midfielder are quite limited next season.
“We might see Amad play in that right-side (wing-back) role, that’s what (the transfer moves) are telling us. We know Amad is prepared to play there, he’s done it a number of times for Amorim, and let’s not forget the players who played that position for Amorim – (Geovany) Quenda at Sporting and look how good he is. He’s not a dissimilar type of player (to Amad).
Quenda has even earned a move to Chelsea – fending off interest from Manchester United – after impressing at Sporting CP.
Bailey concludes: “It tells us that, while he likely won’t play an attacking midfield role at United, Amad is still very much in Amorim’s thinking. It’s a position, if they do it right, he’ll become an immense threat in, that (right wing-back) role.”
How Amad Diallo fared as a right wing-back last season for Manchester United
The Manchester United No.16 started the UEFA Europa League final as an attacking midfielder, with Noussair Mazraoui at right wing-back, although the numbers suggest the Ivorian will be just fine in that area if Mbeumo does push him back.
| Position | Games | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|
| Right Winger | 19 | 5 | 4 |
| Central Attacking Midfield | 11 | 2 | 1 |
| Right Wing-Back | 10 | 4 | 4 |
| Striker | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| Left Winger | 1 | 0 | 0 |
As you can see, the 22-year-old scored four goals and provided four assists in just ten appearances as a right wing-back, compared to five goals and four assists in 19 appearances as a right-sided attacking midfielder.
A central attacking midfield role did not seem to suit Amad – who admires Bruno Fernandes – at all with only two goals and one assist in 11 games.
Therefore, Amorim could be onto something as he plans to deploy the Abidjan-born wonderkid at right wing-back behind Mbeumo, a partnership which may prove deadly next season.
