'Always': Fabio Capello not impressed by £30m Everton player's passing, says he kept making the same mistake

Fabio Capello has told Sky Sports that he was not impressed by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s passing during England’s defeat to France on Saturday.

The former England boss feels Pickford kept making the same mistake by firing long balls up the pitch, instead of playing short.

Pickford has been brilliant for Gareth Southgate’s men over the past three tournaments. The 28-year-old produced a memorable save in England’s penalty shootout win against Colombia back in 2018.

He also saved two penalties during the shootout in last year’s Euros final loss to Italy. Despite his excellent displays for England, Capello has criticised the shot stopper for his role in their last two major tournament exits.

Capello on Pickford

Speaking on Sky Sports News today, Capello feels Pickford has made the ‘same mistake’ in each of England’s tournament exits over the past 18-months.

“I think England was a really good team in this World Cup, I think one of the best. For me, was ready to arrive at the semi-final in the best form,” he said.

“But during the game they made some mistakes. Some mistakes by the defending for the goals, for [Olivier] Giroud.

“But the big mistake they made – the keeper [Pickford]. Not for the first goal, [it] was probably was a mistake. But during the game he had the ball, he shoot always long ball.

“It was possible to play the ball [short]. In my idea of football, when you can play, you have to play.

“He [Pickford] made always long ball. The same mistake they made when they played against Italy in the Euros, Wembley.

“After they are winning, England started to shoot long balls – not play. The goalkeeper, I don’t understand why? Probably all the players were angry.”

Pickford has been brilliant for Everton as well as England over the last year and a half. The £30 million man was previously quite error-prone but he has completely removed this side of his game.

He will be slightly disappointed with France’s first goal on Saturday but his view was blocked off before Aurelien Tchouameni unleashed a shot.

Capello’s criticism of Pickford seems quite harsh when you consider how important the Everton man has been to the Three Lions’ success over the past four years.

One of his strengths lies in his long-range passing and it seems that Southgate is keen to utilise that while he’s playing for England.
