Arsenal cult hero Santi Cazorla has spoken out about his future amid links with a return to the Emirates Stadium, in conversation with Cadena Ser.

The Spanish midfielder joined the Gunners in 2012 and became a firm fan favourite for his hard-working, dazzling displays for Arsene Wenger’s side.

Unfortunately, a serious Achilles injury saw Cazorla lose out on close to 700 days of his career, and there were even fears he’d lose the ability to walk.

His time at Arsenal came to an end in the summer of 2018, when he left for Villarreal on a free transfer after 180 appearances, 29 goals and 45 assists for the Gunners.

The 35-year-old, whose Villarreal contract runs out this summer, has already admitted he would love to return to the Emirates, potentially as a coach or director (Vamos, via Metro).

The Spaniard has now opened up about his future once again, this time in an interview with Cadena Ser.

“I have already made the decision, right now is not the time to say anything,” he said.

“I have an idea of what I want, but in due course I will say what I decide. Now is not the time because we have to be aware of competing.

“I want to remain linked to football. As a coach, I could be, but I see myself more in a role as sports director.”

Back in march, Guillem Balague said on his YouTube channel: “It’s interesting because I spoke to Santi not so long ago and he hasn’t renewed his contract with Villarreal which finishes at the end of the season.

“Basically what may happen, he wants two more years playing. Going back to Arsenal with Arteta is something that I think he will consider as a coach. I asked him about it, he said yes, he will consider as a coach when he retires but he wants to play for two more years.”

Cazorla remains a fan favourite at Arsenal and has discussed his love for the club several times before, keeping the door well and firmly open on a return.

At present, the Gunners have Raul Sanllehi as head of football and Edu as technical director, so Cazorla’s preferred role doesn’t seem to have any vacancies at the Emirates Stadium.

However, he hasn’t closed the door on a coaching role, so there is still hope – and it looks like we’ll find out soon enough what his plans are for the future.
