Ayoze Perez was Newcastle United’s matchwinner as they snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with a stunning 3-2 comeback win over Everton on Saturday.
Rafa Benitez’s in-form side overcame a 2-0 deficit to clinch all three points over the Toffees and the win continued Perez’s strong recent run of performances.
But there was a time earlier in the season when Perez was struggling under the burden of being one of Newcastle’s main creative outlets; playing as a number ten in a side that did not have a lot of the ball.
The arrival of Miguel Almiron has given the club and the fans a lift, but on the pitch it has had a profound impact on Perez’s performances.

No longer is Perez the only one in support of Salomon Rondon trying to make something happen; Almiron’s pace and invention drags defenders away, creating more space for the Spaniard.
And Benitez has also recently introduced a more expansive style of play at home; the Magpies are popping the ball around wonderfully at present, which has also brought out the best in Perez.
Benitez would love to have more creative options – if only Mike Ashley would stump up the cash – but for the time being, Perez and Almiron are forming a wonderful partnership between the lines at St James’ Park.
And that’s what’s taken Perez from a player toiling under the demands of Premier League football to matchwinner in such a short space of time.
