Rangers legend Ally McCoist has once again urged the Ibrox side to make a move for Lyndon Dykes, a striker also linked with Glasgow rivals Celtic.

According to a Daily Mail report from June, Steven Gerrard’s club and Neil Lennon’s side, plus a number of English Championship outfits, are showing interest in the £2million-rated Livingston striker.

Indeed, STV reported last week that English second-tier side Barnsley had made a £1million bid for Dykes, which was rejected.

Dykes enjoyed a superb breakout season in 2019-20, turning in a number of impressive displays for the Doonhammers and claiming 12 goals and 10 assists in all competitions.

With Rangers reeling from Jermain Defoe’s injury and continued speculation over Alfredo Morelos’ future at Ibrox, the need to bring in a new striker now looks more important than ever.

“I’ve been saying for about a year that I would have gone and paid the money for Lyndon Dykes,” McCoist told Herald Scotland.

“I think the big fella gives you something different. He’s strong, he’s aggressive, he’s quick and he’s scored goals against both Rangers and Celtic.

“I’ve never seen anyone recently give the Celtic defence problems the way he has. It’s a gamble, of course it is, but I would take the chance and maybe if Livingston get the right price would sell him.”

While Rangers’ striking woes continue – and could worsen if Morelos leaves – Celtic aren’t exactly out of the woods either, given Odsonne Edouard is likely to be a man in demand.

Dykes, a tall target man with raw power, aggression, a superb engine and a proven goalscoring record in Scotland, would definitely be a good option for either club – and he’s reported to cost a relatively modest £2million.

Billy Dodds told the Scottish Sun that he’d be “the perfect buy for Rangers and the type of player that Gerrard is going to need if he is to stop Celtic” – but with the Hoops reportedly expressing an interest in him too, plus numerous sides from England, it won’t be easy.
