Ally McCoist has told Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast on TalkSPORT (Friday, 7:10am) that it is “absolute rubbish” that Mauricio Pochettino has taken Tottenham Hotspur too far – and believes Spurs will continue to improve under the Argentine.

Following last season’s success of a top-four spot and a Champions League final, Tottenham have started the 2019-20 campaign in poor form. Indeed, Spurs have managed just two wins in eight league and cup fixtures.

Following a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Leicester City on the weekend, Spurs were instantly knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the third round. They failed to beat League Two side Colchester United, losing on penalties.

There have been claims that Pochettino has taken Tottenham too far, with doubts over the Argentine’s future as manager of the north London club. But McCoist rubbished those claims, which will delight Spurs fans.

“It is absolute rubbish that Pochettino has taken them as far as they can go,” McCoist said. “There is an improvement in players and performance. They’ll keep on improving. They need to start winning trophies. They got to the Champions League final. They might’ve plateaued a little. If you asked spurs fans six years ago they would get to the final, they would’ve bit your hand off.”

TBR’s view – Does Pochettino still have Tottenham hunger?

Now an established top-four side and Champions League runners-up, Pochettino has turned Tottenham into a European powerhouse on a limited budget. But does he still have the drive?

In his most recent press conference, Pochettino has stated that he has a good relationship with chairman Daniel Levy and the only way in which Pochettino’s hunger will reignite is some serious investment in the next two windows.

A win against Southampton will help on Saturday.
